As part of the sympathetic re-development of a former Ovaltine Factory into 370 new homes, Dulux Trade Weathershield All Seasons Masonry Paint has been used, as the high performing exterior paint could be matched to the original Art Deco décor, thus preserving the building’s heritage for many more years to come.
For over 70 years The Ovaltine Factory, based in Kings Langley, produced the famous bedtime beverage, and many feared that after operations moved back to Switzerland in 2002 the prominent Art Deco building would be lost to redevelopment.
However, Fairview New Homes designed a plan that incorporated the building’s impressive 387ft-long, five-story façade, as part of the Grand Union Gardens development. Planning restrictions also ensured that the new development’s treatment of the factory was sympathetic, and included its classic colour scheme.
Weathershield All Seasons Masonry Paint was specified in colours matching the original 1912 design. Dulux Trade colour consultants matched and specified a rich red in Poppy for the mouldings, and Sepia Brown for the plinth, both of which offset the Magnolia finished masonry beautifully.
Dulux Trade Weathershield Masonry Paint was ideal for a project such as this, as keeping to works schedules is crucial for new homebuilders. Weathershield All Seasons Masonry provides excellent coverage and is shower resistant within 15 minutes of application, with a recoat possible in just two hours. This means work can be completed more quickly, and is less likely to be disrupted by unpredictable weather conditions. Furthermore, Weathershield All Seasons Masonry was specified for this project as it could be applied over the buildings’ previous coatings and still offer 15 years of lasting protection.
“This was a challenging project but, a rewarding one,” said Stephen Casey, Managing Director of Fairview New Homes. “Due to planning restrictions we had to achieve a finish that would emulate the original building and Dulux Trade was able to work with us to ensure we got the colour matching just right.”
“Dulux Trade was involved from the initial specification and provided us with experience and expertise. Together we have achieved a final result that is integral to the development’s popularity and individuality.”
