Newey & Eyre is warning electrical contractors of the dangers of skimping on tool costs and not really understanding quality marks.
The leading electrical distributor is calling for electricians to realise what safety marks they should look for and how an insulated screwdriver does not offer the same levels of protection as VDE rated ones.
All of the tools within Newey & Eyre’s Defiance VDE range are VDE tested which ensures they have been rigorously checked Tim Johnson, product manager, explains what the VDE stamp of approval actually means: “Since 1920, the VDE Testing and Certification Institute has been actively involved in ensuring the electrical safety of machines, components, appliances and tools. It is an independent institution, concerned only with consumer safety.”
Tools which are sold as insulated have not been tested in the same way and can still conduct electricity. The difference is not visible to the naked eye, therefore contractors must look for the VDE mark stamped on all approved equipment to ensure their safety.
Tim continued: “The quality of the hand tools used could literally mean the difference between life and death should electricians come into contact with live wires while working. However, as hand tools are frequently lost or damaged due to the nature of the job, there is often the temptation for electricians to buy cheaper replacements. Many of these could be substandard so it is essential for contractors to ensure that the products they choose meet the required safety criteria in order to guarantee maximum protection. VDE approved tools do cost a little more but we are asking contractors to consider if a marginal increase is worth taking the risk?“
VDE approved tools carry a certification mark, recognised throughout the world as the symbol of safety and performance. Beware of tools offered as VDE on the basis of compliance to the international IEC 60090:2004 standard, this does not carry the assurance of safety through independent product testing and production auditing. All tools in the Defiance range have been manufactured from the highest quality raw materials to offer a safe, professional performance every time.
Choosing VDE approved tools is an essential first step in helping an electrician comply with electricity at work regulations, however it is essential that the tools are examined on a regular basis. Even the slightest damage can compromise the insulation integrity and potentially expose the user to the risk of injury or even death.
Newey & Eyre has 173 branches throughout the UK. With over 20,000 product lines in stock at any one time, it holds more major brands than any other electrical wholesaler and currently 29 products are available in the VDE Defiance range.
